Peter adore les enfants. Il en a fait son métier et s’occupe avec tendresse de sa classe de maternelle. Il vit avec Alex Spencer, une jeune astrophysicienne; brillante; qui travaille sur les sursauts de rayons gamma. Quand Peter, avec la complicité de Max; le fils d’Alex, fait sa demande en mariage quelques jours avant Noël, Alex accepte et organise un dîner pour annoncer la nouvelle à ses parents, Steven et Joyce Spencer. Steven est astrophysicien lui aussi et voit d’un mauvais œil ce mariage avec ce garçon qui ne fait pas partie de leur "club de savants". Il aurait préféré Edward, qui travaille au laboratoire avec sa fille. Mais il y a un autre problème, les parents de Peter n’ont jamais rencontré Alex et on ne peut plus reculer l’échéance.
